WorkMotion is a global Employer of Record, enabling hire in 180+ locations. Here I offer my analysis of WorkMotion’s unique offerings in 2024, and explain why it is the best EOR for hiring flexibility

Overview

WorkMotion is a Berlin-based company that recently entered the Employer of Record (EOR) industry in 2022. Since then, the platform-based service provider has worked with hundreds of companies around the world to help them hire workers. The company offers two separate sets of solutions: WorkGlobal, which provides EOR solutions, and WorkDirect, which helps companies register entities in ten different Western European countries. WorkMotion’s pricing is above average for EOR services, starting at 549€ per month/person (about $600) if you hire over 30 employees and more expensive if you hire fewer.

WorkMotion uses partner companies and sometimes subsidiaries to allow you to hire talent from all over the world. Its partners are already registered business entities in their respective countries, which means you don’t have to go through the costly and time-consuming process of registration yourself. These partner entities can hire employees on your behalf, acting as their legal employers while contracting them to work directly for your company. If you do expect to later expand into Western Europe, however, WorkDirect can both manage your employees and help you register the entities you need.

Key Features

WorkMotion provides both EOR and company registration services through its online platform. The key features of this company include:

1. EOR

WorkMotion’s employer-of-record functions are managed through its WorkGlobal division. WorkGlobal works with partner companies and subsidiaries in over 160 countries worldwide to allow companies like yours to hire employees in places where you don’t own entities. While you’d normally have to spend time and funds registering a business in each country, WorkGlobal’s entity network lets you sidestep this need by becoming the sole legal employer of your employees. WorkGlobal takes care of the human resources (HR) functions needed to manage these employees while you work directly with them, arranging their tasks and daily schedules. At present, WorkMotion is not set up to allow you to hire independent contractors and freelancers in addition to full-time employees.

WorkMotion doesn’t currently provide recruitment services. Instead, it helps you choose the countries where you can hire talent through tools that show comparative costs, skills, and English fluency. You need to find workers on your own, but when you do, you can start onboarding them quickly with WorkMotion. The first step is to calculate their cost by adding mandatory benefits to the salary you expect to offer, as well as WorkMotion’s fees. The EOR gives you a quick estimation of the cost of an employee and then lets you choose to hire them or not.

Once they’re contracted, employees show up in your account in the WorkMotion platform. You can watch the process of onboarding unfold and see important documents as they’re collected and uploaded to one centralized location. From here, the system will manage your employees automatically by running payroll, administering benefits, and managing leaves.

2. Payroll

WorkMotion lets you lean heavily on its platform to automate payroll for each pay period. As the direct manager of the employees, you’ll need to provide hours worked data to the platform. Based on this data, the platform will automatically assess payroll based on your employees’ gross salaries and the obligatory tax and social security payments that must be made in their countries. You’ll be regularly invoiced by WorkMotion, which will convert the funds you send into over 100 local currencies to pay the employees’ salaries as the law normally dictates. Your invoices and pay slips are recorded in the platform and are easy to find when you need to use them for reference.

3. Platform

Like most modern EORs, WorkMotion offers its services in software as a solution (SaaS) form. When you begin to work with the company, your company’s account is created and populated with the employees you hire. You have easy access to the fields of employees, tasks, accounts, and payments to keep everything in one space.

You’re able to quickly click on employee profiles to see their important information and documentation, contact information, contract details, salary and other costs, and payslips. In your task view, you can see your outstanding and completed tasks and calendar letting you know what needs to be done both for employees and your account maintenance. Your financial information is found in the Accounts and Payments. These let you know what you owe and manage your financial records. Unlike most EORs, WorkMotion lets you manage expenses so your employees can quickly and easily post their receipts and let you reimburse them quickly.

WorkMotion offers 24/5 support through ticketing, though you need to leave the platform and go to a support website for assistance.

This platform is ISO 27001 certified and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant to protect the safety of your private data.

4. Compliance

In addition to complying with international standards for data protection, WorkMotion must ensure compliance with the tax and labor laws in every country where it hires workers through its EOR service. It does this by working with legal experts in all of these countries and keeping updated on new legislation that can change worker entitlements, tax payments, or social contributions. Because the platform handles all of these points for you, it shields you from the penalties and damages to your reputation that non-compliance can cause.

5. HR

Through its EOR WorkGlobal, WorkMotion offers contract generation, hiring, onboarding, payroll, benefits administration, expenses management, and termination services to its clients. Its other department, WorkDirect, handles these same services but does not contract your employees as an EOR. That division has lower fees because of this, starting at 349€ (about $380), and can also help you register a business entity in a single country for a fee starting from 999€ (about $1090).

WorkMotion Reviews

I surveyed WorkMotion global reviews and scores on Glassdoor, and G2. The average scores (as of the time of writing) were:

WorkMotion Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Fast onboarding: WorkMotion can onboard employees very quickly as long as they’re prepared and quick on their end. While this can actually take less than an hour, preparing documents and back-and-forth usually means it can be done in less than a week.Service tickets are not internal: Rather than opening tickets and having them followed up by email, you have to sign into a separate website for service.
Automated payroll: WorkMotion’s platform automatically calculates all your employee spending and invoices you so you can make a single payment that is then dispersed as salaries and taxes. No recruiting services: WorkMotion doesn’t recruit workers for you. Instead, you’ll need to find the workers you need and put them forward to the EOR for hiring and onboarding.
Add-ons: WorkMotion lets you add on health insurance for your employees or

Platform limitations: The Skuad platform can be complex and difficult to learn for new admins.

Handy tools: The platform includes useful tools like a country explorer, cost calculator, and salary recommendations to help you decide who you should hire, where, and for how much.High fees: While the WorkGlobal rate for managing your employees is moderate, starting at 549€ (about $600), you’re also assessed a one-time onboarding fee for each worker of 499€ (about $540)

Unique Selling Point

WorkMotion’s unique feature is that it acts as both an EOR and a global payroll service that helps you register entities in Western Europe. This lets you start by hiring remote workers through the EOR and later expand your operations into new countries quickly and easily.

Overall Assessment: WorkMotion

The high fees WorkMotion charges are likely out of reach for smaller businesses but medium- and large-enterprises will find them appropriate for the level of service provided. The ability to register entities in Western European countries gives this company an extra dimension beyond most EORs so is ideal for companies that seek the hiring flexibility to employ directly through their parent entity.

FAQ

No. WorkMotion does not have in-house recruitment capability.

Yes. For companies that seek to hire directly, rather than using an EOR, WorkMotion can get that company registered as an employer. Note, this is currently only available in some locations (like Germany), as it is not legally permitted everywhere.
